Annecy in One Day: The Best of the Old Town and Lake
Published in Tourism
One day in Annecy is enough to fall for its canals, wander through the narrow streets of its Old Town and enjoy a long walk along the lake. As long as you don't try to see everything.
Here, everything is close together and discoveries come naturally. You can go from a medieval square to a sunlit terrace, from a flower-lined bridge to sweeping mountain views, all without needing a car.
To make the most of your visit, follow our walking itinerary through Annecy's must-see sights, with a few detours and tips to help you explore at your own pace.
9 am — Start your day in the Old Town
Annecy's historic centre is the perfect place to begin a day of exploring. Its cobbled lanes, colourful façades and covered arcades tell the story of centuries past.
Start on Rue Sainte-Claire, one of the city's oldest and liveliest streets. Shops and cafés line its arcades, while the neighbouring lanes invite you to wander away from the busiest routes.
Continue along Rue Perrière and Quai de l'Île, crossing the little bridges over the Thiou. Flowing out of the lake and through the historic centre, this river is an essential part of Annecy's character.
On Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, the Old Town market brings the streets to life. It's a lovely opportunity to discover regional produce before continuing your walk.
Allow 45 minutes to an hour to explore the Old Town's lanes at a leisurely pace.
10 am — Admire the Palais de l'Île, an Annecy landmark
No visit to Annecy is complete without seeing the Palais de l'Île.
Standing on a rocky islet in the middle of the Thiou, this medieval building is one of the city's most photographed landmarks. Its distinctive shape, reminiscent of a ship's bow, stands out against the colourful houses around it.
Dating back to the 12th century, the building has served as a prison, courthouse and administrative centre. Today, it houses an exhibition space dedicated to Annecy's history and heritage.
Take a walk along the quays and across the surrounding bridges to admire it from different angles. Each viewpoint reveals another side of the building.
If you'd like to go inside, allow some extra time and check the opening hours: the Palais de l'Île is usually closed on Tuesdays.
11 am — Head uphill to Annecy Castle
From the Old Town, a short uphill walk takes you to Annecy Castle.
Once home to the Counts of Geneva and later the Dukes of Genevois-Nemours, it overlooks the rooftops of the historic centre.
Today, the castle houses a museum exploring regional heritage, art and history. A visit is also an opportunity to discover its rooms and architecture.
Even if you don't go into the museum, the climb is worthwhile for a change of perspective and another view of Annecy.
Wear comfortable shoes: some lanes are cobbled and the climb can be fairly steep.
Allow around 30 minutes to explore the area around the castle, or longer if you visit the museum.
12:30 pm — Have lunch in the historic centre
After a morning of exploring, head back down into the Old Town for lunch.
Annecy has a varied food scene, from traditional Savoyard cooking to contemporary restaurants and small neighbourhood spots.
To sample local specialities, try crozets (small square-shaped pasta), tartiflette, locally caught lake fish when available, or cheeses from Savoie.
If the sun is shining, find a terrace on or around Rue Sainte-Claire. In summer and at weekends, booking ahead is a good idea to avoid a wait.
Prefer something quick? Pick up a few treats from the town-centre shops and save them for a picnic by the lake.
2 pm — Walk to the Jardins de l'Europe and Pont des Amours
In the afternoon, make your way towards Lake Annecy.
From the historic centre, head to the Jardins de l'Europe, a leafy park stretching along the waterfront. Tall trees, lawns and benches invite you to slow down and take in the scenery.
Follow the edge of the gardens to the famous Pont des Amours, a bridge spanning the Canal du Vassé.
This small metal bridge has become one of Annecy's best-known sights. In one direction, you'll see the tree-lined canal; in the other, the lake and mountains create a picture-perfect backdrop.
Then continue to Le Pâquier, a broad open green space beside the lake. It's the ideal place to sit for a while, watch the boats and enjoy the view.
3:30 pm — Choose an activity by the lake
To round off the afternoon, choose an activity to suit the season and your mood.
Take a boat trip: a lake cruise offers a different perspective on the scenery, with views of the villages and mountains along the shore.
Go for a bike ride: the cycle paths around the lake are ideal for exploring. For a shorter outing, choose an out-and-back route rather than the full circuit, which is roughly 40 kilometres.
Take a break by the water: if you'd rather leave your plans open, simply continue along the waterfront or settle onto a terrace overlooking the lake.
In warmer weather, the beaches are also lovely places for a swim, provided you stay within permitted areas and follow local safety guidance.
6 pm — Return to the Old Town for aperitif hour
As the day draws to a close, head back to the historic centre.
The atmosphere gradually shifts: day-trippers begin to leave, terraces fill up and the streets come alive around the restaurants.
It's the perfect time to experience Annecy at a different pace, choose somewhere for dinner or linger beside the canals.
If you're staying overnight, take another stroll after dinner. The illuminated lanes and reflections of the façades in the water reveal a different side of the city.
Where to stay to explore Annecy on foot
To make the most of Annecy, staying in the historic centre means you can discover the city without worrying about transport.
In the heart of the Old Town, Royal Annecy is ideally placed for reaching the canals, shops, restaurants and lakeside on foot.
Its aparthotel concept is especially well suited to travellers who value their independence, whether they're staying for one night, a weekend or a longer family break.
A way to discover Annecy without rushing, with time to settle in and make yourself at home.
